Poem

He stood misty eyed before the shining mirror
Of the musty green pond, and saw beyond
Its depth, through layers of rocks to sky. For
Long she watched the falling leaves framed the man
And then with curious steps she drew nearer
Him, to talk to fellow stranger and wayfarer.

"Quaint, sir," she stammered into the soft gust
"Why like the season you come again and again
To paint the landscape with your eyes, and lust
At clouds in solid blankets of gray?" Her refrain
Upon his hear fell, and tugged his heart to tell
Before the parting of the road, before the knell

"Here I find what all men seek, the truth of life
That blend us as better things than mere dust
The hidden purpose in plain view of our strife,
Here what's given below the shallowness of crust,
The bonding memories of love. So I come again
Always to still the eddies of my murmuring pain.

For friendship here is my sheltering tree, I belong
To it and it belong to me, the song I give away
That brings back all for which other lives have long
O its love, child, love that make an old man stay."
She looked him and wiped her eyes, saw the sky
Cloud covered, but had all of heaven in her eye.
