A Night to Remember By Dane Smith-Johnsen The whirring sound was loud, very loud. There we were tent pitched in the forest. He was only eleven and I, Well, I had entered the downhill side. We wouldn’t have been there except that He was proud of the campsite he found. And had learned some new campfire skills. He wanted to demonstrate cooking. Hidden in darkness, lurked adventure. But first, dinner and exploration, A circle of rocks for the campfire Fallen wood used for an open flame. Potatoes, pork, veggies, seasonings Together wrapped in aluminum. Nothing could this freedom spoil. We thought. Hunger pangs gripping the aroma. Ten minutes on one side; then, flip it. Deliciously tantalizing taste. I marveled at his new skillfulness. A gourmet dream among scented pines. After the quick and easy clean up, It was time to hike to the platform. We climbed to the observation point. And watched nature in total silence. Before long, dusk was upon us. So, We rushed back to the tent, turned on the light, And played a few card games by the lantern. We had no sooner begun playing… When we heard it… loud and strange above. That whirring sounded like no other. I wasn't afraid until I looked. Above us, a large circle of lights Hovering stationary “watching” What was that thing? Oh, God please not now! Not here. We don't want to disappear. What would my daughters do if, if… No!
