Poem
I remember the night he tore me from light, From the home of a friend to the jaws of the night. A grip like a vice, no mercy, no grace, My head in a whirl, blood drained from my face. He cursed as he dragged me by handfuls of hair, Shoved me toward steel with a murderous glare. He swore to end my existence this night, I swore to him I’d put up a good fight. To the edge of the forest where all hope could end, His hand gripped my arm like the devil's own friend. He reached for his gun—I saw my one chance, And bolted through trees in a terrified trance. The trees didn’t whisper, they held their breath, I ran through the silence, so close to death. He called out my name in a voice not his own, Then echoed an evil laugh, cold as stone. The shadows grew darker, the night closed in tight, No stars to guide me, just terror and flight. His footsteps behind me, relentless and grim, A nightmare that whispered, “You can’t outrun him.” He hunted me down like a trophy prized, Sing-songing my name, forcing terror to rise. I hid in the shadows, trembling with fear, Praying for silence with him drawing near. Monsters don’t yield—they hunt ‘til they claim, He found me again, chanting my name. Blows crashed like thunder, now numb to this fight, I couldn’t scream out—I hung on to the night. He flung me back into the truck like prey, My blood on the dash, my mind far away. No words, just the hum of the wheels on the road, Dragging me off where no one would know. But God sent me sirens, red and blue flashing bright, Justice smiled at me on that cold, cursed night. Through the window I see the steel binds tight, Within my strength, I’ve survived this fight. The woods still whisper, but now they know, I rose from that forest, from death’s shadow. I stand with the silence, no longer its prey, Alive and unbroken — I walked away.
