Poem

I sit and observe our miniature Poodle, Daisy, and our Yorkie, Sunny.
They are the youngest of my fur babies. Of all four, I love them the most.
Do the other two know how I feel about them?
I suspect that they do and love me anyway.

Daisy and  Sunny have a way of completely relaxing in their
All white and mixed brown selves. They will lie, asleep, on their backs,
One with front paws in a relaxed crook, while the other covers her eyes
As if to keep them warm. Or safe. Both are amazing acts of trust.

How did they learn that ease? That complete act of faith
That shows that they are so safe with me, with their surroundings
That they leave themselves exposed in that most intimate way?

It takes people, me, for instance, time to grow out of the trust
We feel as young children when we just know no one can ever hurt us.
But oh, once we learn how not to trust, it takes much too long to get
That easy feeling back again.

So I will guard my Daisy and Sunny
so nothing, and no one,
Can ever hurt 
Their hearts.
