Memorial Day is the day we set aside to commemorate members of our United States Armed Forces who died in service to our country… not only for you and me….but so future generations can live free. Today is the day as a country we remember…we honor and we mourn them. We hold their photos to our hearts and we bring flowers to their graves…to adorn them. My parents fought in World War II at a time when the future of the world looked grim. They enlisted to fight Adolph Hitler and the Nazis who blindly followed him. My parents made it back alive…although Dad could never hear as good as he heard before. Today we remember all those who didn’t make it back or died as a result of wounds (both mental and physical) they received…in that war to end all wars. I stand and thank all the service members on this Memorial Day…and every day… all of you who died fighting and enemy who was trying to take our freedom away. After thanking all those who died in wars…thanking each and every one. I’d like to turn my attention to January 6, 2021. I’d like to thank the 174 Capitol police officers fighting to protect our freedoms who were abused and injured that day. The day rioters from across our country, blindly following the president stormed the capitol in an attempt to take our freedom away… Due to their heroic efforts the rioters were eventually defeated… but officers Brian Sicknick, Jeffrey L. Smith and Howard Liebengood lost their lives and four others committed suicide later because of the way they were mistreated. Police officers lives lost…other’s lives permanently wrecked… by the words and actions of the very government and some of the citizens it was their sworn duty to protect. Even though they are not part of our Armed Forces I think it’s important we find a way… to remember them…along with the servicemen and women we commemorate on Memorial Day. For they too lost their lives on a battlefield…here at home defending Congress, our constitution…defending you and me… And they deserve to be commemorated for their ultimate sacrifice… as they too died attempting to keep us free. All those men and women who lost their lives fighting for our freedom on the land, the air, the waves… when they see what’s happening in the country they fought and died for… I wonder….if they are rolling over in their graves. HAVE A MEANINGFUL MEMORIAL DAY EVERYONE!
