Poem
Rum got to his feet and said, “Let’s go play in the street.” Raisin said, “I’m up for that; some fresh air would be neat.” They were soon outside and heard a sound… FLAP FLAP… THUD… TWEET What a shock it was to find a young bird at their feet A scruffy ball of feathers that could clearly not yet fly Rum looked up and said, “I think it’s fallen from the sky.” Raisin looked around and said, “It’s obvious to me, He’s jumped a little early from his nest up in that tree.” Rum gave the bird a gentle nudge and then his kindest smile “I don’t believe this ball of fluff has fed for quite a while.” And when the bird blinked both his eyes and made a tiny tweet Raisin said, “I think we’d best find him something to eat.” Rum said, “We could try some pilchards from our breakfast dish Raisin said, “Good luck with that; we never leave our fish. “So go get him a dog biscuit from Walnut’s bowl?” Rum joked Raisin said, “Oh yeah, and then by tea time he’ll have choked.” Whatever caught Rum’s eye was something wriggling, something red He said, “Bring me that worm, so that our bird friend can be fed.” Raisin wasn’t overjoyed, the thought just made her squirm She said, “There’s no way I will touch a slippery, slimy worm.” Rum said, “Look, this little chap is hungry and he’s cold, We need to find some food for him before he gets too old.” Raisin rolled her eyes, “You seem to think that you’re the boss, So maybe you can figure it, cos this cat’s at a loss!” Then Rum remembered Pretty Boy sat indoors on his swing, “Ask the budgie if there’s something he might let you bring.” Raisin huffed but still she went and she was gone a while But came back with some bird food and a quite triumphant smile “I asked the budgie for some food a chick would think was yummy, He gave me all this millet which should fill his empty tummy.” Then Raisin put the millet down before the hungry chick Oh boy, that chick was hungry and he wolfed it down real quick. And when the little bird was done, Rum asked him, “What’s your name?” Confused, the bird just cocked his head and so no answer came Raisin said, “You understand that cats can’t talk to birds? For when it comes to talking ‘Cat’, the birds don’t know the words.” The little bird then flapped his wings and gave a cheerful tweet And he and Rum and Raisin became friends there in the street Each day he’d eat the millet that his kitten friends would bring Each night they’d put him in the tree where he would gaily sing And every morning Rum and Raisin stood beneath the tree Where Raisin yelled, “Hey, Bird, come down to play with Rum and me, It’s okay if you want to sing that pretty song of yours, But when you’re done just take a leap into my waiting paws.” Now, cats don’t stumble often, but now and then they do, And Raisin took a tumble which I swear to you is true He couldn’t catch the little bird a falling from on high But just before he hit the ground the bird learned how to fly But Rum and Raisin only ever spoke to him in ‘Cat’ And bit by bit the little bird had learned a bit of that And once his wings were strong enough, he upped and flew away But Little Bird would always come to play with them each day One day they played inside because outside was pouring rain Rum and Raisin’s ‘mummy’ saw the bird was back again She said, “I’ve got no millet; will some bread do you for now?” And it was quite a shock she got, when he replied, “Meow!”
