I value safety  
as I swim whilst made of shadows
crashing into the unbreakable surface tension

Should it rupture I'd lay exhausted -
all limbs and branches
tangled in roots

The sky
only witnessed through the lens  
of somebody else's eye

Faint glows of imagination  
keep me kicking
compelled by the slew of demons
snapping constantly at my heels -
all too ready to consume

Night brings evenly spaced stars  
too regular to be real
dark coagulates within the panic button  
the evaporata makes promises it can't keep
yet I'd smash my hand through if I could reach 

Thoughts trick and tarnish
tell me there's no way out
til dark and light meld effortlessly
to be blindly followed and trap me in place

Reality reveals the moon floating on the water
with a mirror of itself above
and every bit of symmetry  
echoes within this shadowy self I occupy
threatening to disperse

And time ticks on

I should grow my nails long
or pick clean the bones of my fingertips
until I can claw myself to freedom
obtain a vantage point
plan beyond the second in front

And I pray

Let me outpace the enemy on solid ground
or be buried beneath it
