Poem
Although my sister and I are not related by blood, we are as close as any two humans can get outside the bond of marriage. It started when at the age of six, my own mother placed me with this family to take care of while she worked. At the age of thirteen it physically ended when I was given a latchkey and could take care of myself. But for me however, the relation never ended. There was Birdie, I couldn't say Albertha at six, hence the name Birdie. She was the eldest. And then Carmen, she was second. She liked social work. Birdie was a Librarian, she and Carmen loved to read. Marilyn the youngest was the baby and liked medical stuff, like her father, he worked for a medical supply company. Marilyn worked in a hospital setting as a Secretary. And then there was me, what was I in this setting? I went to private school for a while, age two to five. Then public school at age six. They were like giants, much older and wiser. Marilyn seven years older than I was not sure why I was with her family and we both had the same name. But as time went on we became inseparable. Her father passed away first which was a tremendous shock to the family. Especially, her mother. Then Carmen passed another shock. It was a few years later at 102 years their mother died. My own mother passed, shortly after their father. I have been connected to the family ever since. But this story is about Marilyn and I. We both grown up and she got married and had two children, a boy and girl. I went to high school and then worked as a word processor clerk. I hated typing, but it paid well for the time period. Marilyn raised her family until her husband passed away. Then she went half-way around the world visiting places like China and Japan, I still didn't have a clue as to what I wanted in life. But she mentioned here and there about her travels. And I got to go to Europe which was a big deal back then. I got married at sixty. No children, and I had a wonderful life with my husband. Then suddenly after eight years, he passed with liver cancer, and I was alone again. Someone gave me a poetry book to get me out of my dulldrums. I read it and at first I didn't understand, but I kept reading and I would talk with Marilyn about my experiences. She mentioned a few of hers. She didn't like to talk about herself much. Anyway, we got to talking about different subjects and we became closer. I like to make greeting cards and I excelled at it. However, the poetry came later when I was introduced to Amazon. I wrote my first book in 2014 called, "Thunderbolt." She encouraged me to write more. My sister Marilyn travels gave me hope and broadened my life so much. And her extensive knowledge of medical terms help me understand many problems I was having. It seems we were of the same mind. We became even closer when Birdie passed 2019. Now there is just us two and her son and daughter. But unfortunately, she is very sick. I am writing this to keep her body, spirit and memory alive in me. She is the best sister because of her kindness, generosity and unwavering support. Our bond goes beyond blood. Its build on trust, love and shared experiences and memories. She taught me the importance of living to the fullest, while I pursue my passions and to always be there for the ones you love. There can be no greater love between two human beings than that. I will always love you Marilyn. You are the best sister not related by blood one could have.
