The dog on a string with a homeless man attached
Two lonely souls where the world had detached 
Sleeping on the street with no fixed abode
Sat on a blanket next to a busy road

The dog eyes of brown that sadness knows well
Where they came from no one can tell
Both came together when each was in need
Helping each other to find the next feed

Walking this earth living day to day
Begging for coppers is their only way
To sustain their existence and keep both alive
Doing what they can so the duo can survive

Sleeping in a doorway as pedestrians walk by
The pair are invisible, the odd person will try
To offer some kindness and purchase a meal
A box of dog biscuits and a meal deal

No cosy bed to lie in, living off scraps
Keeping watch over when its owner naps
A life not predicted but where the cards lay
A stray taken in by another stray

Out in all weathers, keeping each other warm 
Hot in the summer, soaking from a storm
The dog on the string is devoted to the end
The man with nobody but his canine friend

The man with a long beard, the dog needs a groom
Both lay dreaming when they would have a room
To rest their heads and shelter from the night
Each clinging to each other with all of their might
