Poem
Laura Norder took her gun and strapped it to her thigh The skirt she wore was so damned short she had to strap it high And stood there on the corner where the street lamps dare not tread She waited for the man who had perversion in his head Sirens in the distance wouldn’t come to watch her back A car pulled up, its windows black… and one wound down a crack “What’s on offer, Sweetheart?” asked a voice inside the car And Laura lied for those who’d died, “Nothing is too far.” One door opened, no-one spoke and so she climbed right in She knew she’d chosen well because he had a large cleft chin This matches the description from a victim close to death Who detailed this ‘Kirk Douglas chin’ then drew her final breath But rescue wasn’t what she wanted as she lingered there She was gonna get right into this guy’s slicked-back hair Laura clenched her teeth and set the man’s desire alight One swift swipe was all she took, before she said, “Night night!” * Laura Norder set to work, her day as yet unplanned She set off for a warehouse that was meant to be unmanned Its windows should be black as slate, its doors all bolted tight But this looked like Las Vegas and was glowing in the night In Mr Slick’s address book, this one entry rang a bell And all she knew that she must do is free the beasts of hell She’d locked those beasts in chains and bars and never set them free But now she must unleash them… it was as it had to be The memory was buried deep in walls of hardened steel Impregnable, the walls she’d built so that she wouldn’t feel But now the time had come to drop that drawbridge on her mind To make her stand, she walked to seek the man she hoped to find Underfoot, the crunch of leaves and gravel made her grin What better way, she thought, to see if anybody’s in The pistol in her belt she knew would not be fired today And when a door swung open that one fact was quite okay In the rising light of dawn she saw the man was armed He spoke, “Hand me your weapon and, for now, you won’t be harmed.” Laura raised her hands above her head and crossed her wrists “I’ll never give my gun to any cretin that exists, You want it… come and get it, I won’t need it here today.” The man approached and from her belt he took her gun away. Laura spat her words, “You have to pay for things you’ve done, I shall erase the stench of you beneath this morning sun.” He reeked of beer and showed no fear, but scowled through rotting teeth, “Lady, if you knew my name, you’d know your time is brief.” “I know your name; I know your game; all scum are much the same,” Laura wasn’t finished, “and your death will be no shame.” “So,” said the man, “I guess I can point out ‘that ain’t gone well’ And I’ve got me a cop to kill… you’ve got that ‘copper’ smell. “In this hand I have your gun, and in this hand, another. What is it those yankees say, ‘Time’s up, ya lousy mother’?” Laura grinned and shook her head. “You do love your own voice, If you’re gonna do it then it’s time to make a choice. But you go killing coppers then the Met will hunt you down They’ll track your ass through brick or grass, though countryside or town. Just hear what I am saying, they will hunt you far and wide, Kill a cop and you will find there’s nowhere you can hide.” The man laid down his own gun and he kicked it to one side And aiming Laura’s pistol said, “Unless it’s suicide!” Laura watched the villain’s finger tighten on the trigger “I guess they reattached it, but I’d bet it ain’t no bigger.” His gun hand wavered briefly. “What tomfoolery is this? No one knows my ailment for I killed that little Miss.” Laura fixed upon his glare; a hint of fear was there “I’m wondering… did the medics ever reinstate your pair?” The man, with sudden insight, said, “I left you dead, you witch Should’ve done it sooner… ’fore you raised my voice a pitch.” “I gotta say that you was quick, the way you flashed that knife And wrecked me marriage cos I couldn’t satisfy me wife. You finished me for raping but my dull life needed filling And so me and that friend of mine, we made our hobby killing.” Laura Norder said, “I’ve sought you for so many years You filled my life with nightmares, but I overcame my fears. And now we stand here face to face; so, go on, have your fun.” The man took one step back and to her skull he placed her gun. Laura closed her eyes; she’d shown him that she had survived That everything he took from her, she slowly had revived And when he pulled the trigger and her empty gun went click The daggers up her sleeves each found an eyeball… lightning quick Laura kicked the dead man’s gun toward his lifeless form ‘A gangland killing’ that the news might label as ‘The norm’ Retrieving her own gun, she gave her past a mental bow And wondered if she might become a proper copper now.
