Poem
There are moments when the world seems too vast, and our hearts too small to hold it all. Yet here I am, sitting by the window as the sun stretches its golden arms across the sky, writing to you with the fullness of love and hope. You are young and beautiful, with your whole life ahead of you—a canvas that the future will paint with colors you cannot yet imagine. In this life, one must learn many things, and perhaps the most important are humility, compassion, and empathy. The trees and bushes that sway in the wind teach us this quietly, if we listen. They bend without breaking, their roots deep in the earth, their branches reaching toward the heavens. From them, we learn resilience and grace. The ocean, with its ceaseless waves, reminds us of the ebb and flow of life. There will be times when the tide rises high, threatening to overwhelm, and other moments when the waters recede, leaving the shore bare. Both are necessary, for it is in the rhythm of these waves that the shore finds its shape. Forgiveness is like that tide—an endless return, smoothing the jagged edges of the past, softening even the sharpest rocks. Look to the sky, Caroline, and you will find another lesson. The sun and moon are opposites, yet they share the same expanse. One burns bright, casting shadows; the other glows softly, pulling the tides. Both are essential, as is love in all its forms—fiery and tender, steadfast and fleeting. Loving you, as I always have, feels like the light of both sun and moon, warming and guiding me through every season. You are somebody, my dear. Never doubt that. The smallest leaf on the tallest tree matters, as does the cloud that drifts unseen in the expanse of blue. You are as vital as the wind that carries seeds, the rain that feeds the soil, the stars that shimmer in the velvet night. Life will ask much of you. It will ask you to forgive others when it feels impossible and to forgive yourself when you stumble. It will ask you to love deeply, even when love seems a fragile thing. But know this—your heart is vast, wider than the ocean, deeper than the roots of the mightiest oak. You are strong my daughter. The sun sets now, the sky alight with hues of rose and gold, as if to remind us that even endings can be beautiful. Remember always, Caroline, that love is your guide, and forgiveness your anchor. You are young, you are beautiful, and your journey is just beginning. With all my heart, I am your Father, I am, James McLain
