Poem
Twas the night before Christmas… …And I finally sat down, After last minute shopping, running all over town. Deciding to rest now, I opened my phone To visit the Soup and read a few poems. As soon as I pulled up the soup’s website, My home disappeared in a brilliant white light! Suddenly I was in a large room, Packed with all my neighbors from PoetrySoup! They were just as shocked as I seemed to be, Then a loud voice said, “your attention please!” On a stage, stood a man I did not know, “ I'm here to explain why you're here," his face aglow… "There is a great need that only you can fill. You see, Santa needs a new Christmas song or he'll… …Go insane, go crazy, just be a total fruit cake, If he hears the same Christmas songs and remakes! Over and over, year after year, he listens to the same songs, the poor dear. So Santa called me! yes, the man himself, And asked me to gather my best poets to help. Using his magic we were able to arrange This impromptu gathering though it is strange. Each of you here are the best of the best! (Well except Crystol, she's just here to attest.)" [There were some poets that I didn't know, But if you're reading this, you were there for the show! So Santa asked us to write a new song… A masterpiece poem and not very long.] The man continued, "He'd like it to be about his sainthood, All that he's done, the great and the good. Praise him for the miracles he's done and will do. (I'll bet you get the best gifts when you're through!)" There was a shocked silence all around the room, Some shuffling feet, awkwardness loomed. Then we all went to sit around a table, calling out ideas for this lyrical fable. There was a bit of infighting among the guests. These poets' personalities clashed, I confess. One man held court explaining he doesn't even partake, "In pagan celebrations, For heaven's sake!" Another that claimed the birthday was wrong… “Jesus was born in September…put that in your song!” Then a sweet lady spoke up, “let's just have fun! But please don't forget proper punctuation!” “Wait, said another, we need to be sure these words suggested aren't AI #@!( she swore ).” Yes, they all had their own preferences and ways, But eventually worked together, this job they essayed. Then someone stood, he said, “um…if I might? Sorry to interrupt, but this doesn't feel right. Santa is a fun, even sweet, part of Christmas. But the reason for it all, I think, will be missed! If we write a song as he asked us to do, The meaning of the holiday will never come through… Christmas is about goodness and love, about giving, the spirit of peace connecting us. It's not about how much we get or what Santa Claus does. Most of all Christmas is about Jesus!” Everyone nodded and they had to agree… They may have different faith and beliefs but Christmas is about love and peace! They crumpled their papers and threw them away! And in a few minutes their Christmas song came! Santa was able to stop in on his way through, Delivering presents but he had time to... ...stop in and read the song we all wrote. As we looked on, our eyes filled with hope. He read , his brow lowered, his smile began to fade… And his face turned pink, then red in assumed rage! But when Santa looked up from the lyrics he read, Tears fell from his eyes and Santa Claus said, “I really thought the time had finally come when all of mankind was lost… everyone! But you've passed my test, you beautiful group! The spirit of Christmas is alive in the Soup!”
