Poem

upon reaching my late twenties, my life just seemed to go downhill
my father's health had worsened, and he was in hospital, gravely ill
I went to see him mid-week, and then again on Saturday
but he lost the fight next Friday, when he sadly passed away.

I remember well the funeral as it was a very special date
it was our wedding anniversary, but I'd no heart to celebrate
our loss was felt immeasurably, but with my brother most of all
I'll take care of mum he said, as tears began to fall.

the next few years were stable, and most things seemed just fine
we'd go out with friends at weekends, drinking cider, beer and wine
life was being good to us, with no problems we could see
and we found with dads passing, we'd been left a legacy

this finally gave us both a chance, myself and my dear spouse
to put down a deposit, so we could buy ourselves a house
to own a house felt special, no more paying all that rent
the legacy that dad left us, was so truly heaven sent.

that first house that we owned, we spent so many happy years
then my husband lost his job, so that released my deepest fears
we couldn't pay the mortgage, so the house we had to sell
and we faced some fairly lean times, whilst in that financial hell.
