Poem
Once a bird sat on my windowsill Chirped for me to hear I opened up the window The bird just had no fear I wondered how it could be so And spoke to the little thing It looked at me as if knowing Whatever I was saying. It was the cutest bird that came to me With blue wings and some green Such a pretty bird before I had never seen. Then it hopped into the house I wondered what she’d do I don’t know why I think it she I didn’t have a clue. I got an old shoe box The best I had at home, I filled it with some cotton And some green leaves I had grown. I placed it in one corner And called to the bird to live It hobbled to its new nest That’s the best I could give. The bird sat in it And chirped to say thank you I hadn’t the faintest idea What it would really do. I set out on my morning work Spent the day wondering All about the bird. When evening I had got home, The bird greeted me It hopped on to the boxes edge Wanting me to see. I saw two little eggs It had laid in the nest Now I know that it knew This place was the best. I gave it some feed And water in a bowl It ate and drank God bless this little soul. I sat down in my easy chair The bird flew straight at me Sat upon my shoulder Chirping happily. Children came home from school Wife from work returned, They were all surprised And spoke to the bird in turns. Time passed by the chicks grew wings And began to fly away But the bird and the fledglings Would come back once a day.
