Robert Sherriff - Australian - Poet - Author - Singer - Actor - American Historian – Photographer My Little Brown Shovel My little brown shovel, weathered and worn, holds countless memories within its rusted blade. It was a gift from my dad, given to me over forty years ago when I was just nine. In its humble form, it carries the essence of my past and the love shared by my family. Holding it in my hands, I’m transported back in time. I can almost hear my dad’s voice, filled with warmth and wisdom, teaching me the value of hard work and perseverance. Together, we would dig into the earth, planting hope and nurturing dreams of a brighter future. Those days spent alongside my mum and our loyal companion, Wolf, are etched into my heart. The simple digging became a testament to our unity and shared purpose. We would turn the soil, uncovering hidden treasures beneath the surface while forging an unbreakable bond. Now, as I stand here alone with my thoughts, I find solace in the familiarity of my rustic brown shovel. Its worn handle fits perfectly in my grip, a comforting reminder of the strength instilled in me by my loved ones. With each dig, I honour their memory and carry their legacy forward. In its presence, I am reminded of the profound beauty that lies within simplicity. Once just a tool for physical labour, this shovel symbolises resilience, love, and connection that transcend time. So, I will continue to wield my little brown shovel with pride, knowing that it carries not only the weight of the earth but also cherished memories. It reminds me that even in the face of loss, there is power in embracing the past and forging ahead with hope and determination. My little brown shovel and I will continue to dig, unearthing the soil beneath my feet and the depths of my soul. And through each scoop of earth, I will honour the legacy of my dad, mum, and our faithful companion, Wolf.
