Poem
Nineteen hundred and sixty-one, was a strobogrammatic year. It will be six thousand and nine, ‘til the next time that will appear. It started off aggressively, Ike told Cuba to go to Hell. We ain’t talking to you no more, not buying what you got to sell. He then warned us Americans, beware a military coupe. Handed the reigns to JFK, told John, now it is up to you. A Finnish plane kills twenty-five, because both pilots fell asleep. Minuteman missile a success, now we’re in the cold war real deep. Turkey begins its twenty-fifth, government to add to its list. Kennedy holds a conference, rattles his sabers and shakes his fist. Says the airplane Russia shot down, they’re going to release the crew. We sent Ham the chimp into space, Pretty soon we’ll send a man too. A nuclear reactor in, Idaho goes up with a boom. The Beatles with George Harrison, take over the Cavern Club room. Freedom Riders fill the buses, to test new integration act. They make a Ken doll for Barbie, just how will the children react. Two, count them, two B52’s, with nuclear bombs crash to the ground. JFK brings us the Peace Corps, Ty Cobb is no longer around. The Bay of Pigs invasion failed, brings CIA total disgrace. But Allan Shepard’s rocket sailed, the first American into space. Back on earth race riots break out, martial law now in Alabam. Perhaps the Supreme court’s rule, is nothing more than just a sham. Johnny gives another big speech, says we are headed to the moon. And this, that and the other things, will be coming our way real soon. Did Grissom sink his Mercury, was it really a faulty hatch. Mothers are crazy for Pampers, but does it all come with a catch. There’s now Six Flags over Texas, going to rival Disneyland. Civic Arena gets rolling roof, baseball fans say it is quite grand. New ‘Wonderful World of Color’, is a hit over on NBC. Roger Marris bats 61, makes a record in history. A 58-megaton bomb, the largest ever exploded. Had everyone shaking in fear, and our military guns loaded. At a place called Checkpoint Charlie, everybody got enraged. American and Soviet, armed tanks nearly became engaged. Cooler heads found better things than, letting the cold war get to hot. Vietnam was a new war zone, so we sent men to stir the pot. Soon there were 18000 men, advising how to make war last. It was called peace keeping mission, but war was coming way too fast. Don’t forget about ole Fidel, running around on Cuban soil. He says they are now socialist, that’s a pot now starting to boil. It seems the world is filled with hate, and could bust open anytime. In Wakenda I’m four years old, giggling at silly nursery rhymes.
