Poem
We walked briskly across the traveled path And stumbled upon something peculiar in the dark We didn’t stop to look around, Night was hunkering down upon us and we were All in a hurry to catch the mid-night bus It was pitch dark and we had flash lights But the glow had gone out of them and we had to Rely on the stars shining from the heavens The bush was thick and the grass was high we had to use our knives to cut through the shrubs and cross over the ditch to catch the last bus before it leaves the station We were all returning from a mission that no one could Understand and we ended up in the bushes on a strange land There was no person around and not one shop could Be found, it is the strangest thing I have ever seen But we all bond together like brother and sisters Seven women and one man Traveling through the bushes in the dark With boots strapped up to the knee And the crucifix dangling in front of us And our bag packs fastened to our back And firearm tucked securely underneath our belt Something was out there that we should see But the abyss stood in front of us with Miles and miles of scented wood and Mysteries in the bushes that we hardly understood But we continue to stumble in the dark with Faith and determination and patience to carry-on We saw things that we did not understand And strange emotions came over us and we had To bond together to accomplish our mission We tunnel our way to a corner of the abyss but we were led to a special spot that we had passed over And suddenly we keep going around in circles And the mission that we were on lay cold and bare in the bushes somewhere and we experience a frightening revelation in the dead heat of the night. We stumbled upon a hundred Shoe sole in the bushes position neatly together in a circle And a candle erected in the middle as if they had just completed a ritual and had a secret burial someone had cut through the spot and sprinkle rum all over the lot and the evidence was clear that they all perished over there The sole of their shoes formed a big wide circle. The sole of their shoes stood out in the bushes, the sole of their shoe has a name and an address the sole of their shoe bears their children voices The sole of their shoes was the only identity that they had. We remain there for the rest of the night to reminisce their ordeal and painful sacrifice and celebrate the lives of one hundred soldiers that did not make it home But the sole of their shoes was finally found They lie petrified in unknown graves but the sole of their shoe is carved out with the footprints of time Our five-year mission was finally completed on time The sole of their shoes is strapped to their feet The sole of their shoes is divine.
