Poem
Doctor Fell taught at University Park, like stars gather for enlightenment; And was stern, diligent and upright, like pink cactus bloom environments. He was dedicated to his striving students, although strict about lessons; And there were penalties for those missed, like when grape sun lessens. Doctor Fell abided by obeying rules, feeling students needed a firm hand. Infractions yielded extra homework, and often blue detention, unplanned. Fell had a fair amount of fast friends. He associated with the fine faculty; But, was not popular with pupils. He opined, 'teachers did not need to be.' He was a fortunate, family man, to fond Frances and his two daughters, Like green, golden days of forgiving spring, with red butterfly marauders. They lived in the house of science, where raspberry moon studied stars; And vivid rainbows told stories of the spectrum, to the strains of guitars. Orange sun salutes were routine, on Starling Street, of dancing shadows; As the family saw sultry summer there, like herons, wading teal shallows. Neighbors held noisy, backyard parties, with northern summer nearly old; And nuthatches sang a plum, new dawn chorus, anticipating days of gold. 'Love in a mist' was dissipating, when nature swept, with 'butcher's broom;' And 'drumstick' plants tattooed strong beats, in their green, jeweled room. 'Firespikes' pointed sharp fingers at the sun, in the fragrant, flaming days; As 'nodding ladies tresses' mussed, during pink, 'polka dot plant' displays. One golden day, after maroon shadows, another glum pupil got detention; Where he had to translate a poem to English. But, in a spirit of dissension! He had chanced to fall asleep in class, after helping his ailing dad at home; Yet, he could see the fairness of some penalty, like dark, when sun is gone. But, as John translated that poem, he substituted Dr. Fell for its persona, Writing, 'I do not like thee, Doctor Fell, the reason why-I cannot tell.' School drama! 'But this I know, and know full well, I do not like thee, Doctor Fell!' he wrote. Then turned in a flawlessly done lesson, as rainbows, vibrant hues promote. When Dr. Fell read the now famous lesson, he saw himself in a different light. Moved, he found his middle ground, like lemon noon, betwixt dawn and night. The dramatic changes wrought in Dr. Fell, the march of rosy time would tell; Like when violet birdsong begins to swell, at pearl dawn of the morning belle.
