Where Were You
   Where Were You as I sat Alone on the end of the dock, looking longingly into the night sky. As the so many stars that filled my eyes, and the dreams of you and what we once had filled my heart and mind and the feeling in my chest of the second heartbeat I never knew was there.
   Where Were You as I sat alone in the café’, where we would sit for hours, talking of the future dreams. Dreams of the places we would visit together and of the sights we would see, cherishing the lasting memories of what we saw, the sounds and smells of each and every place we visited. Only to have those memories come flooding back as a sound or scent that would randomly appear every so often.
   Where Were You as I walked alone through the streets, near the home where we were to share our lives together. The home where the sound of many little feet could be heard as they ran across the sunset-colored tile of the home that should have been filled with tiny little giggles running as we chased them back to the bath they so gleefully tried to escape. 
  Where Were You as I walked through the park alone, that famous park in the middle of one of the most famous cities in the world. The park we go to in late spring before it got too warm. The park where the trees had just filled out. Where the aroma of the newly blooming flowers filled the air with their fresh and fragrant perfume. The park where I would lay my head in your lap as you read aloud from one of our many favorite stories  

   Where Were You as I traveled our favorite tree-lined road, the road with the old covered wooden bridge like the one in the story with the sleepy little town. During that time of year, where out-of-towners were known as leaf peepers by those who called this beautiful place home year-round. 
   Where Were You as I sat alone in the cabin in the woods, by the lake we once shared. As I sit in front of the cold dark fireplace, devoid of the warmth and glow it once had on that brisk fall night. The night where our souls first intertwined to become one. Where our shadows danced as one in the glow of the warm fire cast on the cedar log wall. That glow that others could have sworn it was lit from the passion of our first night together. The night we void it would be just us from then on through all eternity.
   Where Were You on that fateful day when all those people, friends, and family gathered to help celebrate our love and commitment to each other? The day we were to forsake all others, to love and cherish each other, no matter what this cruel harsh world could throw at us. The day we were to swear not only to be lovers but to be each other's best friend and confidant until the day we took our last breath and closed our eyes for the last time.
   

Where Were You as I rode alone in that funny little boat, with the man dressed in a black and white striped shirt, a red scarf around his neck, and that funny little hat he wore caulked off to one side, as he used a long pole to propel us threw the water. As he guided the boat to that centuries-old stone bridge, where a boy and girl professed their undying love for each other from that story and author we had to read about in our early school days. As we passed under that bridge another funny little boat with a couple deeply in love kissing passionately as the moved in the other direction, did they see the tears fall from my cheeks and stain my shirt?
   Where Were You as I stood on the end of that dock alone once more? As my tears met the moonlight, that shimmered on the waters of the lake, with the moon rising high into the sky once more. As those same familiar stars twinkled in my eyes, bringing back those fateful memories of love and so much pain, once so very strong but now lost forever.
