Lasting Impressions

From the window, lightning
It’s lasted twenty minutes now
Visible, jagged bolts
A dot to dot that darts across the sky
Growing in size, an angry streak
I stare in awe, astonishing gold
Something to be watched for free
No flick of a switch can stop this animation
Spreads like wildfire, far out to sea
Beaming down on the waters, a brilliant blue
Startled dolphins collecting in marvel
To watch the display of metallic lights
Intrudes the sky, intermittent as a faulty bulb
Revealing sleeping clouds above
They wake for a second and glow, pulsate
With a silvery almost lucid pink tinge
A pure, pre-eminent firework display
The sound of thunder’s gone astray
No harsh winds, rain or sleet
The night composed, a tender breeze
Ice particles above freezing level collide
Magnificent white light
Silver tinsel and rapid static waves
For a split second
Then it is gone
Unlike a plane no impression is left
No trace of its trail
Just a memory
