"After the Port Arthur Massacre, mass shooting in Tasmania, Australia, on April 28–29, 1996, that left 35 people dead and some 18 wounded, it led to stricter gun controls, notably a ban on all fully automatic, semiautomatic and hand firearms. Australia confiscated 650,000 guns. Murders and suicides plummeted. It was one of the largest mandatory gun buyback programs in recent history. There has never been a mass shooting since the gun laws in Australia were strengthened 28 years ago." Source ~ Australian Institute of Criminology. One thing I could change across the whole world? Easiest decision. I don't have to think about it for one second. International ban on guns for non military or police personnel. Included would be all automatic, semi automatic, rifles and hand guns. Only exceptions: Licenses issued to registered farmers for the ownership of a rifle, to an owner that can show proof of purchase of a lockable metal case to house the rifle and ammunition. The other exception, sporting shooters sports club members where their club is willing to take full responsibility for the firearms of its members, Not to be taken off the premises of the club, and locked in a secure vault when not in use. A jail term offense to own a working firearm. An amnesty for 6 months would be held world wide by the united Nations and bodies governing countries outside the UN. All gun ownership must be relinquished in that time. People would be encouraged with rewards for information leading to guns being found where the ban had been ignored. Antique and sentimental guns should be turned in to be made inoperable, before returning them to their owners who would need to register them in order to keep them. Trade embargoes would be placed on countries unwilling to co-operate with these new International laws, and financial assistance would be given to countries unable to afford such implementation of these laws. Compensation would have to be considered to weapon manufacturers, due to the rapid decline in their markets. Crime rates would fall significantly, so police would have more time to do spot checks on residents to look for illegal guns and check that rifles are stored correctly. Members of organizations and individuals that lobby against these laws would be the first to have their premises searched for illegal firearms to be confiscated. All confiscated guns would be melted down. Many will say this is an impossible dream, but the sponsor has intimated that we may choose one thing we would change. THIS IS WHAT I WOULD CHANGE! Australia implemented it in 1996. It has made a vast difference to the peace of mind of Australians, but it is fair to say that due to the falling off of stringent enforcement of the laws, illegal guns ( mostly handguns and rifles) are appearing in civilian possession again. An ongoing enforcement of the laws must prevail to keep our citizens safe,
