Poem
True person .This was written for a friend about a lost friend. Last night I was provided with a list of everything that was to be used in the poem below, as a keepsake and reminder. A Masquerade Our Doreen The most beautiful woman , but no beauty did she bare , With eyes of inward sadness reflected by her stare. And the voice of Jacobite George, (northern accent) one she loved to share, A masquerade in fancy dress , of one you would revile, But once you got to know her It was the love within her smile, As she stole me from the shallow When I found what lay inside. But if you stood too close, my God You would run a country mile . As Doreen spurned deodorant, Cleanliness wasn't her style, As life was just a masquerade And the absence of perfume, vile. In harder times her flowing locks Of Gold were repossessed, Exchanged for a different beauty And bless how Doreen wept . With oversized rimmed glasses Smeared with window sheen. A masquerade in fancy dress Best summed up our Doreen. With Gold and grey high ponytail , This beauty was unkempt, And floral shorts unchanged Draped well above her knees, And wild pink lips this beauty sipped, Slurping, on my cheap caffeine. But hard times have their ups When her beloved lost his leg, I said how careless of him Her beauty was less impressed. It means compensation, "but money Can't buy how I look and dress" I thought, how right you are My beauty, as you look a fecking mess. Thank god she said it's Friday night And dancing is my love and joy, That God would create Such a wondrous vision With swinging udders to deploy. White cowboy boots and Stetson, And not much in between You couldn't mistake who it was , A masquerade, was our Doreen . What about your husband Surely he would like to dance ? With only one leg , she quipped, He hasn't a fecking chance . "I have multipurpose curlers Patent pending quite the trend , They come in different sizes and If you weren't bald I'd gladly lend". Doreen bless , is almost blind , In truth I have flowing long red hair , But I've known her for almost two years So to tell her , I didn't dare. Each curler in place above her ears A northern parody of princess Leia , Or perhaps through rose tinted glasses Possibly , a geisha girl from Korea . These curlers she said are useful When I'm dancing and have no bag, As when all my bits are swinging free I could really use a drag. And true enough she pulled one out Covered in hair and sweat Like torpedo's taken from their chute to light her cigarette. Then one night a knock came On my door, barely dressed, It was of course none other Than our Doreen she said, "I need a lift a I haven't got a car" , so I strapped Her on the roof top ( hillbilly style) And took her to the Spar. ( shop) Now sadly Doreen doesn't call anymore It was all a masquerade, as compensations Paid out now for a brand new 4x4 (Land rover ) One thing Doreen has taught me Is that humour and soul are Queen , So I carry her love always with me A light that has no dark. A masquerade was our Doreen .
