Poem
A Petal Amongst The Thorns Lament, laconic whispers felled, where holm oak trees of centuries sprawled, Where Love’s evading memory stares of old, of Time’s requited loss laid, bare. For no souls do tread the broken ivy path unworn, In sorrow swathed, my slow decline and second death, To sow the seed that spills, and shares with me a sacred home: My necropolis. And faded porous stones unknown, unkempt, plays host to Nature’s lichen spores, Green-crusted golden yawns, and ivy stalks, Clinging, choked, all life about this breathless air. Weaving vines about my head-stone, unpolished slate bluish grey, Not tended where once your tears filled, then settled, weeping through the earth, Quiescent love unvoiced, where do you live, that I may Hope ? The untouched fallen berry whole, unstained where it falls, then rests, And knee high grass wild it sways with delight, still fully dressed, As no scythe reveals our home bereft, in need of love, As I wait below the dome: God’s basilica in bloom. Romany grey rages still, embittered by the enslaved east wind, Veiled the hawthorn coated silver mist, weighted all season through The transient wind calms, the rested sun awakes, And breathes the thaw and hope of summer due. The louring of gathering clouds, eyes the down pouring of love withheld, As Autumn cries with mother’s tears, gushing, abandoned love, unseen, unheard, Spent the phoenix for the Hour waits, as rose’s velvet petals lost. The ghosts of Summer’s kisses breath, forsaken by it’s host, And lays without beauty, soul or smile, her spirit waned within the hallowed grounds, In peace, the Petal dreams without care or sweetest voice. Like centurions, stone angels, grey-winged, clipped, vacant eyes, Stand steadfast, shadowing souls upon the mantle of their world, Innocence beckoning Hope, A single thread upon her bow, a silent note that read: “I am but a shadow of your past, which hides in God’s acre cast, And all that I would ask of thee, is in your life remember me, And perhaps a rose upon cold stone placed, on the day that I was mourned, For in life I was just like you: A Petal amongst the Thorns”.
