Placed Fist in: Pick a Title, Vol 41 Poetry Contest Sponsored by Edwrad Ibeh Inner Sanctum In the very depth of my heart Lies a precious inner sanctum, The seat of sad sorrows and pains Gathered over the flight of time; I free its door on full moon nights When light allows to gaze within, Recall the days when greyish clouds Veiled the sinuous contours of life; I free its door to stir the days When heinous hands dealt me a blow Stealthily from behind my back While staging grim smiles on their face; I free its door to heal the wounds Bequeathed to me as legacy, To eye the scars stamped on my flesh And gauge the trauma from within; I free its door to vent out spleens That gnaw my soul days in days out; It has already claimed its toll, With engines of my heart patched up. Forgiven, but not forgotten Are those who meted out sad woes That set flames in my heart ablaze When I scan the inner sanctum; Their shadows keep haunting my mind Even during the mid of night Like vultures preying on a lamb And consuming it with pleasure; I am now a storm-stricken tree With roots battered and quite shattered With the trunk and stems, sewn with threads, That may greet the ground with light storms And perhaps never rise again To whisper its hymns to the breeze. Let it be as the Lord will wish As only He and I partake What lies in the inner sanctum Which I`ll take with me to heaven With all its pains, woes and sorrows When will knell the celestial bell; Yet I will bid to those who dished Waves of sorrows to me farewell As the door to serenity And the path to eternity Lie not in endless bickering But in espousing the Lord`s will As He alone holds the handle Of impartial, Divine justice.
