Poem

He looked him in the eye and then 
He tilted his head to one side and spit
Inched a little closer in defiance
Knowing he took a chance on getting hit

Forty six feet isn’t that long a distance
Listening to what the voice behind him said
He took the first one just looking
The second went whizzing past his head

Composed like he had ice in his veins
He moved out and back in and then
He stared down at him forty six feet away
Tilted his head and spit again

The scene was tense as he stood and waited
He knew he was under the gun
One in the dirt and one under his chin
Now the count was three and one

He began to feel a little nervous
But thought this is no time to quit
So he banged the plate stared at him again
Tilted his head and spit

It was down the middle like a gift
The moment, it was tense
He heard the crack, he opened his eyes
And watched it sailing over the fence

He was rounding third and coming home
Arms raised like he’d struck gold
Crowd was cheering, a dream come true
Not bad for a ten year old.
