                                             The Inner Voice

                                      If amidst a clamorous din
                                      We wrap a veil of quietude
                                    And softly listen from within
                                   In the depth of true solitude,

                                     If in the midst of multitude
                                  We seek a quiet discrete place 
                                    And wear on a calm attitude
                                 We may hear a low voice apace.

                                 Such a low inner voice, in sooth
                               Emerges quite deep from the soul
                                   And is the voice of real truth
                                  That is present in one and all.

                                For some the voice is indistinct
                                  Like that of a dull dreary fly,
                                  For others it is quite distinct
                                And comes from within as a tie.

                                   If in our own voyage of life
                                We are rowing a flagging boat
                             And with mindful zeal we do strive 
                                Amidst storms to keep it afloat,

                                    If we are in a fix, our ship
                                 To direct to the rightful shore
                          We may seek clues from those equipped
                           Or from those who we may most adore.

                                  Yet as the voyage is our own
                            We need to own the course of choice
                                 And surely we cannot disown
                              The just plea of our inner voice;

                             Indeed, the inner voice guides us
                             To the right goal we need to trust
                                  In the voyage of our own life,
                                  In the rumbles of daily strife.
