Poem
In the dead of winter a crocus rises Within the snow, Jesus is reborn Both fragile yet frost resistant Like Persephone to Hades’ reign Innocence is granted rebirth In the Spring He brings s a whip Fewer kings and queens behold now Big box stores steal Christ’s wonder Brighter than the star over Bethlehem Spring ends with his flesh hanging He laughs at his April’s demise He doesn’t mind winter birth Spring is a time to disrupt the market A time to hang with strumpets and lawyers Before Easter comes to take Him Summer comes after Easter We’re free of holy days till winter In the bright months where is Jesus Between birth and ascension? He asks us to dance on the dates Summer is the time after the ascension When fireworks celebrate freedom Months free from the Fall Easter eggs and Peter Rabbit Both are not commercial enough Crucifixion doesn’t move merchandise Did He know he would carry the Cross In the month of April like a sinner? Always getting up after the fall He invites others to carry their load Stacked presents on the breaking point Winter comes for all of us Help me to see a chance for rebirth Jesus, Satan and Santa are co-opted We are diseased with Alzheimer’s Who forgets that seasons are alive? Jesus reminds us to be babes He asks us to be innocent He asks us to be mature in dying When winter comes bitterly Ask the way to Bethlehem Every day is a chance for Christmas To experience our Crucifixion We dismiss our present unopened Still unloved when December passes Unworthy to behold what’s pure Happy birthday, Jesus A crocus two millennia old Yet still a child in the dead of winter Asking us to go back in time Asking us to face Easter with You
