The Dreamer

I dreamt a dream of wondrous things
Of lands beyond the sea
Where fairy tales and magic rings
Were waiting there for me

I dreamt of castles in the air
Of dragons breathing fire
Where knights and ladies fair
Were filled with love and desire

I dreamt of stars that shone so bright
Of angels singing songs
Where heaven's gates were in my sight
And nothing could go wrong

But then I woke from my sweet sleep
And faced the cold and gray
Where life was dull and bleak
And dreams would fade away

I tried to hold on to my dream
To keep it in my mind
But soon I felt a piercing scream
And left it all behind

For dreams are only dreams, they say
And nothing more than lies
They only lead us astray
And fill us with false hopes and sighs

But still I dream, for I must dream
It is my only way
To cope with this reality
And make it through the day

For I am but a dreamer
And dreaming is my fate.
I know not what is real or true.
But only what I create.
