Poem
Their human ma and pa were spark out in reclining chairs But Rum and Raisin watched the TV with enraptured stares The western had just ended with the credits rolling past And Raisin said, “That gunslinger was super duper fast. “I really liked the way he walked with that unhurried gait, The dust; the sunsets; all those guns and bandits hid in wait, I fancy that I might have been The City Kitty Kid So now I have a yearning of which I cannot be rid.” Rum said, “Tell me, sister dear, what is this new ambition, Spell it out and it could be our next exciting mission.” Raisin shrugged and said, “I want to see the Wild West, And if you could do that for me, I would be so impressed!” Rum licked a paw and slicked an ear, his whiskers started twitching He looked at Raisin and declared, “You’ve got my brain cells itching, But look at Daddy’s Tippy Tappy screen for what you seek And you will see the story of a place called ‘Milton Creek’ “I know you’re gonna tell me that we’re cats and cats can’t read But Daddy often read aloud and I know all we need To take us on a journey back into the Wild West.” Raisin’s eyes glazed over… Wild West, Wild west, wild wesssss…. * “Holy cow,” said Rum to Raisin, “where’s our mum and dad? And where’s our house and where’s our TV… am I going mad?” Raisin said, “You can’t be talking like that in this town, So quit your chatter, Cowboy, or they’re gonna take you down.” The Winchester that found its business end in Rum’s left ear Was not the only thing that had him trembling in fear For Raisin, his cute sister’s, Smith & Wesson wanted trouble “Put the rifle by your toes or soon you’ll taste the rubble.” Ranger David, moved his rifle tip to face the ground He said, “You’re from a poem, is it somewhere here around? Perchance it might explain to me how cats might wave a gun I guess an international poet wrote you just for fun?” Raisin cleared her throat and then she spat into the dust “I could shoot you here and now and wouldn’t be too fussed But there’s a man I want to meet, a man I came to seek A founding father of this town that you call ‘MILTON CREEK’. “I heard he was the gambler who frequented the saloon And a poet, don’t ya know it, who could talk a pretty tune And by the way, I have to say, I’m quite astounded that All the folk of Milton Creek are able to speak Cat.” Now, Rum was having kittens and said, “Raisin, shut your trap, This guy’s a town official and he knows you’re talking cr*p.” Raisin stared him in the eye, “You keep your asterisks, Nobody got nowhere if they didn’t take no risks.” Tom, the mayor, arrived and said, “Of every beast that lives, I never heard a cat spit out such double negatives, My Ranger here is only doing what this town requires But he and I can understand your innermost desires “Alas, I have to tell you that the man you seek has passed. He rambles in the afterlife with his good wife at last. Milton (call me Milt) has maybe brought you here today Soup’s poet extraordinaire has written things this way.” Raisin said, “I think I need at least one more opinion, And with this gun with six slugs in, I think I hold dominion. You think my brother and myself were written by this guy But I came here through my dad’s words, and this you can’t deny.” All the townsfolk gathered round, some with their guns in hand Each bowed their head when Mayor Tom said, “You need to understand, Milton is now up above, but still around these parts He shall reside forevermore in our poetic hearts.” Raisin said, “The City Kitty Kid is in my stead And wonders why each of you has a really massive head And eyes like saucers and red cheeks and such extended feet You’re not the kind of townsfolk that I thought that I would meet.” Dave, the ranger grinned and said, “It’s really kinda tragic You’ve travelled through a writer’s words into a world that’s magic This is not the ‘Milton Creek’ that you came searching for This is ‘Milton Land’, it’s kinda Disneyland but more.” A sudden blinding light caused Rum to climb the nearest tree His fur all stood on end - could Raisin see what he could see? Milton Hankins waved and smiled and said, “Okay you bards… Which of you old reprobates… would like to deal some cards?” Raisin tried to walk toward the man from in the light But simply couldn't move although she tried with all her might All the world went blurry like she’d whizzed through time and space And in her bed, three aces and a hand drawn smiley face * “Wake up Raisin, where’ve you been, you’re almost apoplectic.” Rum was shaking Raisin who was shouting things poetic Raisin blinked and mumbled, “That John Wayne would surely wilt And even Clint would bow down to the man we knew as ‘Milt’.
