Poem
Not so many years ago, In the mirror, my reflection would show… Gentle eyes, a giggling smile, Ivory skin that looked pudgy and smooth, Like the subtle whisper of a child’s breathe, Smooth and revealing what it is… To be filled with innocence, naïve, sweet. It wouldn’t be long before I’d see, There in that mirror, looking back at me… Knowing eyes, a captivating smile, Risking the eventual brilliance of a heart, Who knows what it means to see… Light, love, laughter in the moments When a heart touches hope, when a light Touches a soul… Not so many years have passed, In the mirror, my image would possess… Twinkling eyes, like a tender caress, Feelings echoed in the promise… Reflected in the silence, a sincerity, A moment of insight despite all the darkness A moment of kindness despite all the fear A moment of love despite all the dread. It would be only a breathe before time revealed, There in the mirror, a dream turned real… Fading colors… where azure eyes once appeared, There were stonewashed and dim iris’, Feelings blended with the ache, Stones who were breaking, yet never saying… Just how beautiful this life has been, This life, this love, these moments… So much joy, so much hope, so much growing. Yes, growing up has brought me a friend… There in the mirror, where I see a toothless grin, Lives someone who knows me well, Someone who never will kiss and tell, Someone I believe can make it through this life… Without giving in to the doubts or the gloom. Because I know that one in the mirror, I know that, even though she grew up too soon, She can make it to the end without betraying her friend, The lady in the mirror who looks back at where she’s been, Remembering… remembering that growing up with her… Has been more of a blessing than she can grasp. This is the blessing of a heart who knows, There in the mirror, Her soul has known what it means to love and loose, What it means to grow with the truth, What it means to grow, through and through… Grow wings and grow more beautiful, With each passing dawn, her heart has known… What it is to grow like the song of the soul, The song that sings on, even when we’ve gone!
