Poem
The day after my cousin died from cancer…no let me start with I prayed hard…I mean hard…with unrelenting fervor…convinced until there was no further reason to pray…to pray. I bothered friends relentlessly…the heavens were stirring my aim. You see, her husband was told to say his goodbyes. She was on life support and it had grown roots. Her heart rate…everything showed a death was imminent. Her husband went home, threw out her sneakers that were next to the door…exploring his rage, his mourning… The times when things looked at their worst, God placed people to comfort me, to not let me dissolve into fear and grief. I prayed…fast forward, one year later Pam watches her daughter get married. The miracle, brief but kind. That was October. Around Christmas my cousin’s text short - pray for me, Kim. Circling back - I told Pam I wished I could have been with her when she was in the hospital. She told me she saw me. She said I was laughing and trying to get past the nurses. Do our praying spirits carry past our fleshly selves? Wow…I pondered. So a year later, Pam died. I sat alone the next morning. It was early. My iPad tablet sounded off with a FaceTime sound. I was surprised…who would be video calling me so early. The sound was a doorbell…the only time this sound happened was FaceTime. I opened it up. The message said it was my cousin’s birthday. The funny thing was it wasn’t her birthday nor was my tablet set up for her birthday. Still it was her birthday- in heaven. One year later, I was driving to my daughter’s house and in front of me I saw a license plate with a P and an M. I’m thinking that I’m just thinking of Pam and let that go. So I pick up my daughter and all of a sudden, as I’m at a traffic stop, I blurt out, “No way!” Right in front of me, clear as day, the license plate spelled out PAM. Stranger than fiction, I know! But this is all true! The hospital wrote up a letter as to my cousin’s miracle. She had a large family that lived around her. They had all been gathered in the waiting room. They were not ready, caught off guard. They had even wheeled Pam’s dad across the street, who himself was in the hospital. When the doctors were declaring that she would die, he said NO! Texting was fairly new and we, me and my siblings, were encouraging our cousins with prayers. When my mom died two of Pam’s siblings came from the North, just so happened on the same flight that brought my son, and my brother-in-law picked them all up. They came to the door with their great big bear-hugging comfort. By the way, my cousin loved…absolutely loved practical jokes, so when I see her in heaven, I will be wagging my finger…”you…” God is good. He doesn’t always give such big miracles, but when he does they comfort all who hear. God’s comfort is long and wide. With my mind, when mom was dying, I laid my head on Jesus’ lap. Where else can I be comforted. Bless your day!
