Poem

 

I was born in a cave den with seven other kittens in the Fall,
born blind and helpless but my nose could sense my mom;
all I wanted to do was nestle close and drink her sweet milk,
as days passed by my eyes opened to discover my siblings.
We loved to tumble and play in the den while mom slept,
at twilight she would leave us and come back smelling of blood;
and this was our routine for months until the snow fell,
I could smell it cold and fresh outside the cave opening.
Wanting to explore I would peak out but mom dragged me back,
then, one day she let us follow her into the snowy night;
our snowshoe paws left big footprints as we followed closely,
mom taught us to be silent and taught us to catch snowshoe hare.
I grew quickly and discovered I was an agile climber and good swimmer,
with my sharp teeth I killed the hare as I roamed boreal forests;
my fur was dense and beautiful and I was a solitary Lynx in Canada,
I avoided humans as mom had taught me-   they would kill for my fur.
