Poem
When you roll the ball to someone You can never know what happens next Most will roll it back in a game that is pleasant but becomes boring Others might demonstrate how clever they are and show off - there's the right balance to be had with this before that might become boring just as quickly as the pleasant Some might take your ball, walk off There's 'look at the ball you rolled with contempt' type (I'm stinging just thinking about it) Then there's people who not only play ball but say you've read their mind by instigating, they put spin on the ball, go with it if you suddenly change tactics, and you've both got quick reactions... Trouble is then it was special and turns out they hang around playing ball I'm lucky, I have my established players who love the way I play and are even fine if I don't play I like to question - 'hey which type of ball player are you and be honest?' I'm a mix of several You know when someone does something nice and you thank them and they say "I'd do the same for anyone" - it's fighting talk, stick your polite, toxic positivity where the sun don't shine then... (also phrased as "you are so nice, how lovely of you"). I mean I love a bit of "do you want this?" and I'll say "will it go to waste otherwise?" and they say "if that's what you need to hear" and I say "glad I could help"... There's something about genuine connection, let's not pee all over it - erm what was my analogy again? That ball stuff - erm, something between not needing to be one in a million but not being 10 a penny... I don't know how many to a penny ball players like me are and I can't always tell if that play was any good but I wish I could tell apart polite clapping, from the naturally enthusiastic to the genuinely impressed. If I do a lap of victory I don't want to feel a right fool do I? Nope. No one does. Self worth is a complicated subject. Human connection and trust steadies me. The ball is being rolled to me in the form of a cooked breakfast right now, I'll go and play.
