Poem
In the darkness of the night, in so deep The angry voices, secrets I have to keep Shadows dancing 'neath the wood door For a child of four, it's hard to ignore Nights can be terrifying, it's sad but true When you're so small, there's not much you can do The screaming, the walls, they tremble and roar Harsh words and doors slamming once more The fear of the unknown, it looms overhead If one parent leaves, where's the other instead? She brought me into this world with care He taught me to tie my shoes, lessons to share Please, don't ask which one to choose Either way, I lose The early morning sun, a glimmer of grace Brings the promise of a new day's hope embrace She serves my cereal, a comforting start He calls me to play, joy in his heart I quickly finish, grab a ball and a glove Hoping to win their affection, perhaps their love? It feels like it's all up to what I do To become their little man, strong and true To keep my family together, you see I will bear the burden to be the best I can be But as the night sky darkens once more The voices return, like waves pounding the shore I pull up my covers, wipe away a tear For a child of four, it's a lot to fear Yet, the early morning sun will always rise With the promise of hope in its gentle guise She'll make my cereal, he'll ask me to play In their love and warmth, perhaps I'll find my way Though nights may be terrifying, full of fear Remember, the dawn of a new day is near From the seeds you planted, beautiful crops will grow Unfortunately, they missed out on a special person they'll never know
