Poem

The night sky was there just for dreaming,
filled with shooting stars to wish upon.
I played freeze tag out where the streetlight,
left its glow on the dew-covered lawn.

Running, screaming, hoping, and dreaming,
the day would never come to an end.
If it did, I knew that tomorrow,
I would do it all over again

Each sunrise was filled with hopes and dreams,
rainy days meant time to make mud pies.
Each sunset brought me childish laughter,
when I was tired, I just closed my eyes.

I knew that with the next morning’s sun,
a brand-new adventure would begin.
And when the evening rolled back around,
I would do it all over again.

I don’t know when I stopped believing,
wishing on that first evening star.
Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny,
or keeping fireflies in an old jar.
 
Blowing out all my birthday candles, 
and then maybe I would get my wish.
Kicking an old can out in the street,
or spinning the bottle for a kiss.

I know wishes are meant for children,
and dreams should be left up to the young.
I’m too old to have any hope left,
all my songs have already been sung.

But there is still one last adventure,
when I’m ready for it to begin.
I know God will have the can ready,
and we’ll do it all over again.
