Poem
We enter the town with no preconceived notion about what was going on; we just wanted to dine at a good restaurant and sing some invigorating songs. The atmosphere was clear, our spirit was fine and we were having the time of their lives. We were set in one motion walking from town to town, enjoying the night life and holding each other tight; all of a sudden, this tense feelings came over me signaling that something unpleasant was about to transpire ,and so we shift our positions to the side of the road where the light was shining along the path . Hundreds of men and women armed with sticks and stone walked down the narrow streets looking for the man with artificial arm. They said that he was a thief and he had broken into the vault and stole the original documents were sent from “heaven”. They had pus in their eyes and fury raging in their faces, screaming and shouting disdained words as they crossed the street. They broke through the border line and we were just in time to make it back to our apartment before the street brawl begins. As we were about to settle down, we heard a huge cry from the top of the street ordering everyone to evacuate the town, “Everyone must leave now,!” the voice rumble around the town as billows of smokes shoots up from the ground. I could hear screams and shouts from across the ocean and everyone was moving into different direction, the fire was approaching the village and everything starts burning, we grab our travel bags and leave and we were just in time to be spared from the heat. Chaos erupted in the street and people were running in different direction like mad man out of beat and the heat penetrates the town. Fire engulf the buildings burning out the sins while the Pentecostal preacher on the corner screaming and shouting, fire, fire, fire. And the congregation joining the hymn singing burn, burn, burn, oh what promiscuous sins. Shortly after the fire reached the church building and burn everything to ash on the ground, and the women standing in the middle of the road singing, the hymn, “when my soul caught fire”, had to jump in the nearby river as the fire swept through the entire town. The wind blow the smell of death through the streets as the smell of charred bodies saturate with the wind; their faces could not be recognized, they were like firewood’s hanging from burnt out buildings waving in the sky. We got a flight and left the horrors of death behind. As our plane took off, we hugged each other and looked through the window at the sight of death on the ground, and the burnt-out village spinning around. The island people have a giant heart, they wanted so much to live, but destiny took them to a next level. The village is on fire.
