Little boxes By Michelle Morris 09/08/2023 Little boxes, little boxes Little boxes everywhere Tick the forms for every single thing That humans have to bear Little boxes, little boxes Little boxes for everyone Even before we're born Little boxes start stacking up on us There are name ones And gender ones There are date ones And family ones Wherever you go In the world You carry boxes Everywhere There are home ones And school ones There are DNA ones And rule ones Little boxes, little boxes Little boxes, don't despair There are vote ones And job ones Address ones And atonement ones And the more you walk through life The more boxes are in your stride For your religion And your vices Your passions And devices For the ones you want And the ones you don't Follow boxes Or untick them for no Are you this one? Or are you that one? Are you the happy one? Or the sad one? Do you drink this? Or eat that? Do you need this? Or exclude that? Little boxes, little boxes Little boxes become your life It's your childhood It's your paperwork It's your history If you're creditworthy From your first grade Until you have degrees You might end up On corporate knees Or you learn From way on early life Hide the boxes Keep them out of sight But those boxes They still follow you Whether closets Or soul pressed blues From your sex life To your satire Your sports teams Or political science Nothing can be Completely blank Your boxes will always Have a stamp On your heart life And your mind's eye Your soul's fire And your body tired Little boxes, little boxes Little boxes won't set you free Little boxes, little boxes Little boxes everywhere Tick the forms for every single thing That humans have to bear Little boxes, little boxes Little boxes for everyone Even before we're born Little boxes start stacking up on us Little boxes, little boxes Little boxes where we end up For as long as we Are on the earth Little boxes Are our life's work Maybe it's time to stop No more ticking multiple boxes Let's share our gifts instead And forget about boxes that we dread Let our souls shine And our hearts feel And our energy vibrate Beyond our field Let us be human Let us be divine No more boxes for us For we are all special and sublime © Michelle Morris, 2023
