"Incubus, a demon or evil spirit descending on a sleeping woman to mate while she sleeps . . . a dream, an oppressive nightmare." Dictionary three times an Incubus has invaded my dreams it always begins the same quite lovely the first time I was young it was a demon man who came second time it was an ugly ogre (well that was not lovely) the third time it was Lucifer himself and it always ends with me in terror the first time I was having a sweet romantic dream something most young women will often do the man was a handsome warrior who stood beside my bed staring at me then, he began kissing my lips and caressing me so gently but everything changed and his hands got rough I looked at him ... he had changed into a demon and was gone when I started screaming my nightgown was ripped apart and my body was covered in bruises and wounds I was so ashamed I did not tell anyone the second experience was with an ogre that followed me home one evening but, I began running to get away from him and I locked my door shaking that night he crawled into bed with me he was an ugly hideous little monster and he wanted to kiss me but, I fought till he left because I prayed to God this haunted me for days and still creeps me out I can still see his bloated body the third time I was dreaming of being in Paris I was having a cafe and reading a map when a handsome man approached, lost? not lost, I said, just looking for places to visit let me help . . . he offered let me be your guide I liked him and so, I said yes through winding streets he drove very fast ending up at the entrance of a cemetery I thought that was so odd to be visiting a cemetery very famous he said so I followed him and things got very dark and quite strange we were at the entrance of a crypt when he grabbed me and carried me inside it was set up like a grand bedroom and in a flash he was all over me it was an assault and when I looked into his red eyes I saw Lucifer I was found wandering the cemetery but, of course, it was just a dream or was it ? I could not sleep for months after sometimes, he tries to enter my dreams but praying to God keeps him away _____________________ March 13, 2023 Poetry/Free Verse/Incubus Copyright Protected, ID 03-1531-247-13 All Rights Reserved, 2023, Constance La France Fictional write Written for the Standard contest, Pick-A-Title, Vol. 35 sponsor, Edward Ibeh, Judged 03/23/2023 First Place
