Poem

I love your sun brazen skin, 
Short, free hair black as coal, 
  Contrast in the eyes, the whites 
Are white and brown surrounds 
The pupils: eclipse brightened nights. 

Off to work you’d slave many days
When we would weary wave you away:
  Bye, we said. Down cherry run road,
   The gravel crunch told us you’d go. 
  Late eve, off clock, then you’d roll home, 
 Tumble inside, grope your alarm, 
And slumber try. In your arms fly more, or 
Squeeze your thigh, if only I had known. 
   I didn’t cling to you alone. I had then been 
An innard° kid, caring only about my own.                  Inwardly self-occupied 
  But with prudence, paternal piety stowed, 
Thereafter, I humor friends, I feel your grin.-
Although I miss you now, I have you, somewhat.
   I see with your eyes, I tighten your smile, 
Your facial hairs on me grow in, slow, thin. 
In deep eve, this similar figure’s frame I clutch- 
    This flat frontal image hardly can compile
Your corporeal mold, did man’s-stature-deep soil. 
The hour before, cold press’d lips did recoil.-
But your warmth often touches my mind, 
 Your eyes watch mine in this bedside picture, to 
   Restore as many memories I can find.
 I will, with mind’s eye’s cognizance, 
   Imprint on my thoughts co-presence, which
 Dreaming, flings me through time to you.
