Poem
There is a large cattle property in the Northern Territory of Australia where the bores are named after Famous cricketers and that prompted this piece. Northern Territory Bores If you're travellin round the Territory, with cattle thirstin for a drink. There's some boreholes that exist with names you'd never think. They are tributes to our sportsmen but it's a cryin shame. No matter how I searched I couldn't find a womans name. There's Hadley and Doug Walters and Kepler Wessels bores. Viv Richards and Tony Greig, David Hookes out leg before. Lewis Ridge and Kapil Dev are named out there as well, Max Walker has a bore, named after him they tell. If you ride a little further on you'll see Bill Lawry Tank. Don't know what the waters like, it could be pretty rank. There's Lillee bore and Gavaskar the water is quite deep. At Burge and Holding bores you'd have a restless sleep. There's bores named after Botham, Bradman and Thommo too, There is McKay and Wally Grout, Bruce Land to name a few. Clive Lloyd is well deserving and Ian Redpath played the game. Banaud, Hoad and Greg Chappell, now there's a well known name. Remembered still is Len Pascoe, Rosewall and Ashley Mallett. Hickety and Marshall and there's a bore named after Hassett. Trimble and Keith Stackpole they have tanks of their own. Joel Garner, Simpson and Laver these names are all well known. That only leaves McFarlane, Grimmet and Gleeson bores. They're out there on the station pumping water keepin score. Why can't Cathy Freeman or Dawn Fraser get their names? Is it because they are female or they play different games. Our sports people make us proud of the land where we belong, So now I'll add some names of the sportswomen in our throng. I know I cannot name them all, so we'll just even up the books. We'll take a few and leave a few, we wont mention any cooks. Lauren Jackson joined the Opals and Steph Gilmore our surfing ace. They couldn't beat Glynis Nunn and Loretta Harrop kept up the pace. Sally Pearson from track and field Betty Cuthbert an Aussie icon. Lisa Llorens returned with gold and Raylene Boyle was always on. Pam Kilborn a Gold Medalist while Anna Mears was cycling, Leanne Tander our racing driver and our skier Alisa Camplin. Lauren Eagle a water skier and with boxing her second sport She KO'd three opponents and won nine bouts in all. For Evonne Goolagong it was Tennis a player of renown, Niki Dudex on a mountain bike, raced the mountains down. Jessica Watson sailed alone, around the world at sixteen years. That shows courage and determination, she had to conquer fears. Karrie Webb she is our Golfer, people talk about her swing. Lauren Burns at Tae Kwon Do, now that's another thing. Rechelle Hawks our Hockey Great, on the winning team. With three Olympic Golds that has never before been seen. Jaqueline Freney, Leisel Jones, and Hayley Lewis all went swimming. Our cricketers Belinda Clark, Betty Wilson, and Meg Lanning, Like Pam Burridge, and Jenny Armstrong all have earned the right. To be remembered by us all and have their name in lights. Now for those I haven't mentioned I hope you understand, That this is just a sprinkling of the sports women in our land. They sacrifice and do the work to be the best that they can be, Good enough to bring the gold back to this country.
