Placed First in: Can`t Believe It was a Na Poetry Contest Sponsored by Silent One The Search for Idealism Existing in the recess of the mind Idealism, a gem one seeks to find, Is a goal that is worth attaining And its search makes life worth living. The offshoot of a noble dream, Idealism seeks to guide one`s goal Towards a sure and shining stream That reflects the light of the soul. Vain is life without idealism, Just like a ship sailing at sea, But failing, despite realism, To find for shelter a fitting lee; Vain is life without an ideal, Just like someone stripped of the soul And facing life`s real ordeal To know which way to wisely stroll. If we do glance around the world What do we with sorrow witness? What does all our landscape unfold: Happiness or sad bitterness? With sorrow we behold sanguine wars Between advanced neighbouring nations On a scary scale not seen long before, Inflicting misery on populations; With awe, in various regions, we witness Mounting tension and violence, Stemming from lack of tolerance, Sowing amidst families dire distress; With pain we view states torn by civil strife Driven to the edge of starvation, Without access to the basic needs of life, Without any hope for salvation; With anguish we see a divided world, With a minority lapped in plenty And a staggering majority hurled In the abyss of abject poverty; With fear we eye the onslaught on nature And pollution of our environment, Foreboding ill omens for our future In the absence of major containment; The global scene surely simmers with misery In the midst of unrivalled opulence, Devoid of a gleam of humanity And braced with the armour of impudence. The search for the ideal role Indeed, varies for various souls In line with goals they wish to achieve And high values in which they believe. Yet just peep down the inner self: It yearns for peace and smiles for others, It shines with hope and faith in oneself And is keen to treat others like brothers. Let the search for true idealism lead Us to treat all men with love and kindness, To treat one and all as of the same breed, To light their life with rays of happiness; Let the search for idealism in life Properly pave the way to global peace, Rightly end all civilian strife And endow citizens with gleams of bliss; Let the search for idealism Sow in one and all the seeds of compassion, Ignite the flame of altruism And herald a new global vision; Let the search for idealism Elevate the whole human kind, Make the world thrive with humanism And, in justice, redeem mankind.
