Poem

Jacob was a young boy who looked like an angel.
I did not know him until he was nine.
But I could tell he must have been a gorgeous baby.
The story was that mother plunked him on a bar stool.
Told his daddy “I don’t want it,” and walked away.
He was fresh out of the hospital, maybe four days young.

Daddy was resentful; he had never wanted a child.
His lessons were harsh; he beat him with a belt.
I found this out and reported it, but nothing happened.
Unfounded said the DFS document. It is always unfounded.
Jacob and I formed a bond, slowly, not at first, of course.
He could not trust his own father, how could he trust anyone else?
I was his school counselor, and he spent lots of time with me.

Jacob was the beautiful and the damned.
An angel sent to earth, who had never felt loved.
I asked about his grandparents.
He did not know them. His father despised them.
His father despised a lot of things.
Jacob had a keen sense of humor. He could be absolutely hilarious.
I often wonder what happened to the child no one wanted.
