Poem

I meet my two childhood friends Jacque and Linda.
My twin and I have known them since fifth grade.
We are all going to be seventy this summer.
Carolyn my twin has begged off, because of a broken neck.

We have so much fun, maniacal laughter.
Remembering some stories, making up other stories.
It is the best time! Jacque says, “You sit in the front, Caren.
So you can give Linda directions.”

We begin our short drive to the restaurant.
Jacque is yelling directions from the backseat.
Turn here, go two blocks, take a right. Go under the bridge.
I am rolling my eyes inside my head. We have not changed.

Jacque and I are still bossy, and Linda is trying to please us.
We have to eat American food. Linda will not try Chinese.
Jacque and I wanted Mexican, but that’s not American.
It is a fantastic supper though.

We go back to the hotel and laugh our guts out.
Jacque says she has been married five times.
Neither of us knew. If there is a loser in a room, I will find it.
And I will marry it, she tells us. We are hyenas now.

They finally kicked me out at 1:43 a.m. I was wired.
Back up at six, ready for more fun. Had a blast!
The only way to beat meeting a childhood friend
Is to meet two childhood friends.
