Poem

Through the old rusty gate, got into the courtyard.
Laid my hand on the metal door handle,
And twisting it, it opened wide showing the dark inside
With a mouldy smell entering my nostrils

The rooms were dusty, full of cracks and fissures
With cobwebs hanging from the rafters
Photos of ancestors were hung on the walls
‘Lions’ that lost their teeth who prided over their ancestry

A house long abandoned and its inmates scattered
A symbol of dissension and discord
A house that neither was a home nor a haven
Lacking in the spirit of unity, each at daggers drawn
 
Rebuke and displeasure, squabbles and mean talk, 
Destroyed the quiet and peace of its inmates
Dreading each wave and swell that came one by one
The members of the family drifted over turbulent currents

Slowly it got disintegrated, now lies in total wreck
Holding dark secrets hidden in its dingy attic 
Not a soul now sets foot in this ravaged compound 
With a desiccated homestead from which love has long fled
