Poem

When you see me walking toward you
Please do not pass me by as one unseen,
Look at me; look intently into my eyes
As you are, so once I might have been.

When you see me, greet me as a friend
Though I am different, my blood runs red
My heart beats, my soul is human real,
I am a patriotic American, chosen or bred.

Of the way I dress, you may not approve
I may be different, I don’t think like you
I adopted this country as my homeland,
My skin may be a lighter or darker hue.

My religion may not be your way to God
I’m grounded in my faith from childhood,
When you see me walking toward you
Assume I mean you no harm, only good. 

I have bravely acknowledged my gender
Perhaps not what you thought me born
Doing my best to prove my intrinsic worth,
Certainly not deserving of your scorn.

So please, do not make false assumptions
Based on ugly things about me you hear
Join with me in all my best intentions
Salute me, and I you, with all good cheer.
