“The Apocrypha of Familiars” 

Wings hover 
light luminescent
revelling sprites dark pearls
Corvidae shades
of a family 

highly functioning
dysfunctional plural
morphing unobserved
perceived non-unique 
spiralling into shape

more black and grey
than white spills 
from their eyes
light from their shining 
hidden away

intelligence 
sharp beaked 
tapping codes, 
self-aware, they recognise 
themselves 

cloaked 
and disrobed 
in the mirrors
of others' tomes

children
produced
from opposites
ruthless reigning raven 
and charming dove chanteuse

it is said, 
in blurred stories,

of the ancient ones, 
no tears washed
the feet perched on 
that brittle rose dripping 
thorny cross 

the tales
of their time 
spent there sham
flighty fanciful
Apocrypha 

the birds 
stopped singing
their hearts 
were shocked
and ceased beating

while watching 
from above 
men murdering heroes 
and saints as beasts, 
no reflective love

no tears -
not from their blackcap eyes,
but torn open - deep sorrow planted
where their precious ruby jewels
were sown

passerine
without tongues
those singing things stolen
unlike man they now speak 
of far kinder gods

avian drop 
like silent songs
a murder of murmuration
minds blistered unbalanced
ominous and unexplained

dark numbers 
glassy eyed, 
brain dead magnetised, still
their plumage ruffled 
by folktales and floods 

carrying misfortune
and a devil’s drop of blood, 
superstition says they never 
entered Noah’s ark 
nor alighted from above

preferring to sit in the rain 
gossping amongst themselves
chortling their chirping
falsetto over the much maligned
untouchables, the stained 

black and white
the shadows of a soul
blur to 
impious grey 

truth spoken false
by chattering 
non-confessional 
scarlet cardinals 
suffocates all innocence

the piercing ...

honesty 
of those beautiful
pure all seeing eyes
the wise inky-stained
intelligent feathered quills

the small 
yet larger familiars 

fade away
