MY FOOLISH HEART I met her on the first of April, appropriately enough. Well, there’s no fool like an April fool they say. Actually I think I made that up But I think it’s quite true anyway. She looked a picture standing there on that first warm day of Spring.. Her arms were bare, her skirt way up above her knee And dare I say that she was shapely? Or will you say I’m shallow saying that? Well, if I’m honest I would probably agree. And then she spoke and, in that moment, no-one else existed. The crowd around her simply faded from my view. “Hello,” she said, “If my information’s right, you’re Nathan.” All that beauty and well-informed too. “And who told you that?” I said breathlessly like an awkward teenager. (But I’m not a teenager, for God’s sake; I’m thirty-nine) “Oh I never reveal my sources,” she said, eyes sparkling, “And your name is …?” I said, “since you know mine.” “I suppose that’s only fair,” she said,” It’s Eve. “Well,” I said, “I’m pleased to meet you madam” Then, with a touch of genius, I added, “If your name’s Eve, I shall change my name to Adam.” We talked all through the evening, friends And, in case you’re wondering whether, The answer to your question’s yes We spent the night together. Next morning I couldn’t find her, Though I searched for her near and far. She’d disappeared completely. And so had my wallet and car. No, there’s no fool like an April fool, Whoever said that was right. I’d been taken to the cleaners …. But it had been a wonderful night. 3rd April 2022 My Foolish Heart Cash Prize Poetry Contest Sponsor - L Milton Haskins
