Poem

Wake up in a cold sweat, trying to make it till morning
Can’t forget all you’ve done, it came without warning
A tidal wave through our peaceful village, tearing and destroying
All we’d built up and cherished, but there’s no ignoring

The stillness beside me as I fight these battles alone
Your silent dreaming as I try to restore our home
Filled with all this pain inside me, you used to be my greatest strength
But now I hardly recognize you, you breathe on me with stranger’s breath

I lay there in our bed, shaking and crying
Waiting but no relief comes, I’m slowly dying
Just wanting to be held by you, but there’s no denying
The frigid air that floats between us, after all the lying

Our once proud union, slowly washed away
All those memories now only fade to gray
So many things I hold on to dearly
Now through the tears I don’t see you clearly

Could it be we’ve had our time?
That this path is yours, and another is mine
But these thoughts of you still haunt my dreams
Lying next to you, holding back my screams

Of fear and doubt and guilt and shame
Could a hug from you now possibly change the game?
Or are you sleeping just as well
As the night we heard our wedding bells

So still I lie here all alone
In this house that used to be a home
My tears they lessen every night
You lie there asleep after another fight
All I wanted was to be consoled
By the one with whom I wanted to grow old
But now I’m not sure it even matters
Can we still be whole again, or has it been shattered?
