in a narcissistic world
propaganda for the 
unsuspecting
validation 
for the damaged

writers 
soldiers 
victims 
survivors
war fought daily
in shallow trenches

buckling at the knees
stand up 
brave comedians 
salute compatriots and cowards 
caught in their camouflaged net
all the crumbling watch towers

his world, and
smiling commands
stand up 
do not cry, smile victory
straight shoot and lie

barbed-wire 
cut deep state PTSD
suicide romancers
sanguine sleep walkers
high wired
kamikaze dancers 

take bullets for glory
pacifying criminals
MIN number maladies
released now
front-line compatriots
double agent entrancers

I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.
