Poem
(Inspired by the ‘Harry Potter’ series by J.K. Rowling) “Good morning, Hermione Granger! I’m surprised to see you here. I figured you’d be at Hogwarts Or grabbing a Butter Beer.” “Although that sounds enticing, As it’s the most magical place on Earth, I figured I’d visit the Muggle world As it is my place of birth.” “I’d love to hear more about Hogwarts, But I have another question if that’s okay.” “Questions are what I’m good at, So please ask away.” “You are a major bookworm, And as a result, you’re very smart. But because of your big brain, I feel like people don’t see your heart. You’re loyal, kind and brave, And you are tough as nails too, But you’re always described as ‘the smart girl’ Which isn’t the whole you. So I guess what I’m trying to ask, And forgive me if this question is bizarre, How do you step out of the box they put you in, And show them the many layers of who you are?” “That is an excellent question, And never apologize for asking. Our curiosity is our key to the world, Our access to things that need unmasking. As for the label I have been given, You bring up an interesting situation. I pride myself on being a smart girl, But that shouldn’t be a limitation. When people look at others, They often see one thing, And these stereotypes distract From all the potential you can bring. I have proven that I am smart, Time and time again, But I have also shown my courage and strength By fighting to the end. Harry might have defeated Voldemort, And set the Wizarding World free, But I think it’s pretty clear, He couldn’t have done it without me. I always fought by his side, Even if it seemed impossible, I’d always try, And when we knew that his time was up, I did the hardest thing of having to say goodbye. So yes I mastered potions and spells, And was known to always behave, But I risked my life and broke the rules, And showed that I can be brave. And so to you and anyone else Who feels that they can do more, I challenge you to step out of that narrow box, And into a world that is yours to explore.” “That is really good advice That everyone should take to heart. Humans are like a puzzle, With many different parts. You’ll miss the big picture If you only see one piece. I need to prove there’s more to me, And maybe the stereotypes will cease. Now I know there is no limit To the person I can be, So I’m ready to face the world And show them: this is me.”
